Lockout/Tagout: Saving Time And Money Through OSHA's Minor Servicing Exception And Alternative Protective Measures

Webinar: ID# 1023457
Recorded On-Demand
About This Course:
When it comes to controlling hazardous energy through lockout/tagout (LOTO), the applicable OSHA standards are quite specific and stringent. Alternative protective measures (APM) exceptions are few, but there are permissible options available if you understand the compliance standard.

Companies can take advantage of what is commonly referred to as “Minor Service Exception to Lockout/Tagout” (OSHA CFR 1910.147(a)(2)(ii)(B)). The Minor Service Exception allows employees to access hazardous areas of the machine without performing lockout/tagout, so long as certain criteria are met.

To utilize APMs and the minor service exception, four specific criteria must be met. In addition to determining if you meet the criteria, it’s important that you perform an energy hazard risk assessment to assure that all potential energies have been identified and addressed. Once you have checked these boxes, utilizing the minor service exception may be to your advantage.
