The New Confined Spaces In Construction Standard
About This Course:
New Rules Effective August 2015

For many years, the only Confined Space standard from OSHA covered just general industry. Now, after over 20 years of development, OSHA has released a new Confined Space standard for the construction industry.

The new standard goes into effect in August 3, 2015. It deals with the many Confined Space issues specific to the construction industry and gives detailed guidance that has for years been lacking in the construction industry.

Specifically, the standard places new requirements for evaluating, planning, and monitoring confined space activities not previously required at construction job sites.

Just Announced!

OSHA is instituting a 60-day temporary enforcement policy of its Confined Spaces in Construction standard. Full enforcement of the new standard, which goes into effect Aug. 3, is being postponed to Oct. 2 in response to requests for additional time to train and acquire the equipment necessary to comply with the new standard.

During this 60-day temporary enforcement period, OSHA will not issue citations to employers who make good faith efforts to comply with the new standard. Employers must be in compliance with either the training requirements of the new standard or the previous standard. Employers who fail to train their employees consistent with either of these two standards will be cited.

Learning Objectives:

A necessary part of many construction projects includes entry of confined spaces such as manholes, crawl spaces, pits, tanks, and anything not suitable for continuous occupancy that puts workers at risk due to the sheer difficulty of exiting.

This interactive training session will help you and/or your team learn how this new standard will require changes in how we deal with confined spaces work that falls under construction regulations, including:
  • What work is - and is not - covered by the new standard
  • The key differences between the General Industry rule and the Construction rule
  • How to know which rule to follow: General Industry or Construction?
  • How the new standard fits in with existing hazard-specific standards in construction
  • The four classifications of confined spaces in construction
  • The inherent and induced hazards of confined spaces
  • What you need to know about permits under the Construction rule
  • Details of atmospheric monitoring requirements
  • When you must re-assess a confined space
  • The requirements for Competent Person and Qualified Person
  • Early Warning Systems in confined spaces
  • The different responsibilities of the host employer, controlling contractor, and entry employer
  • What’s on the horizon with a proposed NFPA Guide for Safe Confined Space Entry and Work
