- SS 601: Six Sigma Deployment
This online course provides an overview of the fundamentals of Six Sigma, including what it is, what it does, and how it works. It also introduces the concept of lean management, which has been incorporated into most modern Six Sigma programs. Six Sigma is a continuous improvement program aimed at doing the right thing faster, better, and more efficiently than the competition. The student completing this course will be well-versed in the language of continuous improvement projects, the business environment in which these projects are conducted, and the type of people from your organization, such as group facilitators or statisticians, needed to do so.
- SS 602: Business Process Management
This course introduces the Six Sigma view that any organization is made up of the processes that it conducts to meet the customer's needs. This process view and the functional view, where the organization is described in terms of its functions, are both reviewed. The process elements and process flows are described, and the owners and stakeholders of each process are identified. How to select improvement projects for these processes and provide measures of performance are also discussed. The final topic is the "voice of the customer," which provides direction to the project selection.
- SS 603: Six Sigma Project Management
This course covers four areas. The first is the project charter, required for every Six Sigma improvement project undertaken by the organization. This charter outlines the goal of the project and what it will take to accomplish that goal. The second topic is team leadership, getting the team working together and motivated toward results. This requires human resource skills. The third is team dynamics, the ways that teams interact, and the fourth is the change agent, looking at implementation of the improvements and all of the problems associated with changing the way people work.
- SS 604: DMAIC—The Six Sigma Improvement Methodology
The Six Sigma Improvement Methodology, DMAIC, which is used for all Six Sigma process improvement projects, is introduced. The five stages of the methodology are covered separately. These five stages are define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. This course provides only an overview of the methodology, so the tools used during each of the five stages are introduced at the level of what they do, when to use them, and why to use them.
- SS 605: DMAIC—Define and Measure
This course begins the explanation and application of the detailed tools used in the DMAIC process. The topics of define and measure are introduced. The main tools under define include process mapping and Pareto. Process mapping describes the process and Pareto charts help to prioritize issues within the processes that need to be improved. The measurement area includes basic statistics, such as basic probability and distributions. The classification and collection of data are also discussed, and the topic of descriptive statistics is developed. No background in statistics is necessary for this course.
- SS 606: DMAIC—Analyze
This course provides the knowledge necessary for data analysis as it applies to analyzing the performance of a process. The first area discussed is exploratory data analysis, which includes the important tools of regression analysis. The second area discussed is hypothesis testing, including tests for means and variances, paired tests, fit tests, and analysis of variance. The third area addressed is predictive methods, including estimation and confidence intervals.
- SS 607: DMAIC—Improve: Design of Experiments
This course provides one set of tools (others are included in the following course) to support the improvement phase of the DMAIC cycle, the phase that the whole process is set up to support. The specific tools fall under the category of design of experiments. Concepts and principles of designing experiments are introduced first. Then the various statistical experimental designs are covered, including one factor experiments, full factorial experiments, and fractional experiments. Taguchi methods, an alternative statistical design approach, are also included.
- SS 608: DMAIC—Improve: Statistical and Lean Management Tools
This course completes the set of improvement tools for the DMAIC methodology. The main statistical tools provided are in the category of response surface methodology, both steepest ascent and higher order experiments. Students will also be provided with an understanding of EVOP. Another category of tools introduced in this course is the Design for Six Sigma tools, such as quality function deployment and failure mode, and effects analysis. A third category is the tools of lean management, which has become an increasingly big part of Six Sigma implementations. These lean tools include kanban, poka yoke, and SMED.
- SS 609: DMAIC—Control
This course covers the topic of statistical process control. Statistical process control is a process by which the results of work processes are measured and tracked for the purpose of detecting changes in those processes, and then developing responses to those changes. Primary emphasis is given to the standard Shewhart control charts, which charts to use, and how to use and interpret them. Advanced charts, such as short run, CUSUM, EWMA, and moving average charts, are also provided. The related subject of capability is explained here as well. This subject is the source of the name Six Sigma. This subject also completes the DMAIC cycle.
- SS 610: Six Sigma Practicum
This online course provides details and explains the fundamentals of a Six Sigma project. First, a project is selected and a project plan is developed. For both of these steps, the analysis that goes into it is explained. The student must select and plan a project of their choice in parallel with the sample provided. All five phases of the DMAIC cycle are then conducted and a separate submission is required at the end of each phase in accordance with the expectation set forth in the course. All tests and experiments are detailed. Faculty will provide guidance to students in the development and completion of their project. Students must receive faculty approval of the project plan before proceeding, and successfully complete the project in order to receive their Black Belt certificate.
