Description:

Setting up a chemical hygiene plan (CHP) can be a complex and challenging process. With the onset of GHS alignment and a shifting regulatory landscape, it’s more vital than ever to ensure that EHS professionals understand how to craft and implement an adequate CHP to help keep their workers safe and their businesses compliant.

In order to create an effective CHP, you must determine how best to identify and assess all of the hazardous chemical exposures, who’s going to manage the program, which methods are best for controlling employee exposure, and what must be included to ensure the effectiveness of your chemical hygiene training program.

Things can get complicated quickly if you aren’t familiar with the applicable OSHA requirements and the recently revised Hazard Communication Standard. Applicable regulations mandate that facilities engaged in the use of chemicals in laboratory settings must develop and implement a written CHP to protect employees working in laboratories from unique and wide ranging exposures to chemicals.

Noncompliance could lead to catastrophic worker injuries and costly fines – both of which could be avoided with an effective CHP in place.

Join us to learn the procedures to outline in your CHP—from how to address equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), work practices, training, and policies to help protect employees from the health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used at work.

You’ll learn:

  • How the recently revised Hazard Communication Standard applies to CHPs
  • Factors to consider to verify that your workplace is in compliance with applicable lab and/or HazCom standards
  • Who in your workplace is covered
  • What to include in your CHP to ensure it’s as comprehensive as required under the law
  • Best practices for creating effective standard operating procedures
  • Specific control measures—from engineering to PPE—that must be included in a CHP
  • Source information on chemicals to include, and how to be sure your library of Safety Data Sheets is complete and current
  • Identify and evaluate procedures for working with hazardous chemicals, including use and maintenance of PPE and other protective equipment, such as chemical fume hoods
  • Who should be designated as chemical hygiene officer—and responsibilities to assign to associated staff
  • How to set up a process for routine review of the CHP and make any modifications as needed
  • Tips for providing site-wide annual employee training
  • Required elements to include during training and the training documentation to demonstrate compliance
  • Precautions to take when dealing with toxic substances, carcinogens, and other hazardous chemicals found in the workplace, including exposure monitoring and medical exams
