Do You Know The Safety Laws? Your Safety Compliance Requirements?

Under the OSH Act (Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970), employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace.

To accomplish this, OSHA sets and enforces standards by which all employers must comply. These safety compliance rules, known as standards, include (links go to the Department of Labor's page for OSHA):OSHA Compliance Seminar

Your Employer Safety Management Responsibilities For The Required Safety Rules

As a safety administrator, you have safety compliance requirements to help ensure the workplace safety of your employees.

Specifically, under OSH law, employers have a responsibility to provide a safe workplace. This includes the responsbility to:OSHA Compliance Seminar

  • Comply with standards, rules, and regulations issued under the OSH Act
  • Make sure workplace conditions conform to applicable OSHA standards
  • Make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment and properly maintain this equipment
  • Use color codes, posters, labels or signs to warn employees of potential hazards
  • Have and communicate operating procedures so that employees follow safety and health requirements
  • Provide safety training in a language and vocabulary workers can understand
  • Employers with hazardous chemicals in the workplace must develop and implement a written hazard communication program and train employees on the hazards they are exposed to and proper precautions
  • Post, at a prominent location within the workplace, the OSHA poster (or the state-plan equivalent) informing employees of their rights and responsibilities
  • Keep records of work-related injuries and illnesses
  • Report all work-related fatalities within eight hours, and all work-related inpatient hospitalizations, amputations, and losses of an eye within 24 hours
  • Not discriminate against employees who exercise their rights under the Act
  • Correct cited violations by the deadline set in any OSHA citations
